Why do skilled facilitators of adult learning experiences encourage the use of structured protocols? In my experience, protocols enable participants to better understand the purpose of the work that they are engaging in. They also ensure equity, provoke deeper study of identified texts and practices, and provide a safer framework for rigorous and even uncomfortable dialogue.

As a literacy coach, I’ve spent the last year researching, selecting, and modifying a variety of new protocols that I am hoping will enhance the work that I do with teachers and students this year. My work with Communities for Learning exposed me to protocols that support text-based discussions and peer-review. There are others that can be used to enhance different phases of coaching work. I’ll be blogging about some of them throughout the week ahead.   1. Also, it’s an ASCD book, but we didn’t get a copy in the mail—I got mine from the Teacher Leader’s Network. It was just published in April–but I don’t know what the selection process is for the books that get sent to members…
